Top 3 Destinations For An INSEAD Family

The word “travel” defines an INSEADer. It’s a common interest that runs through every promotion and it’s something we would like to share with our children.  We all know that traveling increases our cultural awareness, curiosity and understanding of the world. That’s why it’s important for us to share with our children our love of traveling and discover new places together. Here’s our list of places that are family friendly and approved by other INSEAD alumns!

Marrakech, Morocco

Why do we like it?

Marrakech is unique in that it’s a cultural melting pot of Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Located at the edge of the Saharan desert, it has much to offer in terms of it’s unexpected beauty, buzzing markets and traditional places to see. Walk around in a souk with your family where you can find beautiful ornaments, jewelry and fabrics, or visit a Hamman, a traditional Moroccan bath for a relaxing massage or sauna after a long day of sightseeing. The Saadian tombs are also a must-visit, where you can walk on intricately decorated tiles and see the beautiful carvings.

Traditional Moroccan Pottery

You will have ample opportunities to try Morroccon food, so don’t miss out! There are many restaurants and bars that serve alcohol, and some will even have belly dancers performing live in front of you.
Do take note that since it is a predominantly Muslim country, it is important to dress appropriately. Be aware of your surroundings and exercise caution in certain situations, and you will be just fine!

Where to Stay

Book your stay in a Moroccan Riad, defined as traditional Moroccan house or palace with an interior garden or courtyard. What makes them special is that these houses are made with traditional moroccan architecture and decorated with intricate designs and tiles, which bring out the beauty and personality of the place. To have an authentic and memorable experience, we recommend that you immerse yourself fully in the Moroccan atmosphere.

Bali, Indonesia

Why do we like it?

Bali was, is, and always will be our all time favorite. There is something new to do and see every time you visit, and the charm never dies. For the spiritual, the religious, the surfers, and the party people, Bali offers something exciting for everyone. Visit the various traditional Hindu Balinese temples and take part in the rituals, enter the sacred monkey forest or visit the scenic rice terraces in Ubud, swing above trees in picturesque spots, trek up a mountain overnight to watch a beautiful sunrise over a volcano, or party all night in the famous night clubs of Seminyak, we guarantee that you and your family will not get bored.

We recommend trying some authentic Indonesian cuisine while you are in Bali. Did you know that Balinese food varies by region? For example, Sumatran cuisine will be different from Javanese cuisine. However, a typical dish will contain steamed rice as a staple surrounded by various side dishes of meats and vegetables. From Nasi Goreng to the famous Chicken Satay, there are plenty of flavorful dishes to taste.

Where to Stay

Staying in a villa with a pool is a must in Bali. These beautiful villas host large open spaces with plenty of greenery. You can have the option to lounge on the deck chairs and soak in the sun, or jump into the pool to cool off. Start your day with a slow and luxurious breakfast in the open dining area. We recommend staying in Seminyak if you want to see more of the nightlife, and in Ubud if you want to enjoy the lush greenery of Bali in the day time. You can also stay in our top pick, Villa Mannao Estate.

Seoul, South Korea

Why do we like it?

Seoul has a charm that cannot be described in words- you will have to experience it for yourself! We love the history and culture you can experience in Seoul, such as the Gyeongbokgung Palace or the Hanok homes that give you a peek into how the Koreans used to live. We especially love the fact that shopping districts are open till the wee hours of the morning. For all the shopaholics out there, this is what we call a shopping paradise. Korean brands, especially beauty and skin care brands are world famous, so we recommend that you stock up! Head to Dongdaemun for fashion and bulk purchases and Myeongdong for international brands and local skincare products.

If you have never tried Korean barbecue, now is your chance. It has taken the world by storm, and you do not want to miss out on this authentic food experience. At Korean BBQ restaurants, everyone gathers around a grill in the middle of the table. Everyone takes part in the cooking process, and eats the freshly cooked meat along with Korean side dishes. It’s a great family activity because it’s all about getting everyone together to do something fun! If you are not much of a meat eater, head over to Gangnam, which is famous not only for it’s financial district, but also for the numerous international restaurants and hipster cafes it hosts.

Where to Stay

Live an authentic Korean experience in a traditional Hanok home with modern facilities. These homes are created using elements such as long curved roofs and alternating ondol and maru flooring that help keep the home cool in the summers and warm in the winters. Each house is constructed in a specific way, so as to maintain balance with the surrounding environment. You will find many such homes in the traditional Hanok village, which you can stroll through, and enjoy the beauty from the outside. An interesting fact is that many yangbans (people from the ruling class) lived in these homes during the Joseon Dynasty. You will also be able to learn more about the architecture and design of Hanok homes in museums close to this area.
